MindScratch: A Visual Programming Support Tool for Classroom Learning Based on Multimodal Generative AI

Programming has become an essential component of K-12 education and serves as a pathway for developing computational thinking skills. Given the complexity of programming and the advanced skills it requires, previous research has introduced user-friendly tools to support young learners. However, our interviews with six programming educators revealed that current tools often fail to reflect classroom learning objectives, offer flexible, high-quality guidance, and foster student creativity. This highlights the need for more adaptive and reflective tools.

Modifying AI, Enhancing Essays: How Active Engagement with Generative AI Boosts Writing Quality

Students are increasingly relying on Generative AI (GAI) to support their writing-a key pedagogical practice in education. In GAI-assisted writing, students can delegate core cognitive tasks (e.g., generating ideas and turning them into sentences) to GAI while still producing high-quality essays. This creates new challenges for teachers in assessing and supporting student learning, as they often lack insight into whether students are engaging in meaningful cognitive processes during writing or how much of the essay's quality can be attributed to those processes.

Supporting Teachers' Professional Development With Generative AI: The Effects on Higher Order Thinking and Self-Efficacy

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a noteworthy milestone and a consequential advancement in the annals of major disciplines within the domains of human science and technology. This study aims to explore the effects of generative AI-assisted preservice teaching skills training on preservice teachersself-efficacy and higher order thinking. The participants of this study were 215 preservice mathematics, science, and computer teachers from a university in China.

"Mistakes Help Us Grow”: Facilitating and Evaluating Growth Mindset Supportive Language in Classrooms

Teachers' growth mindset supportive language (GMSL)--rhetoric emphasizing that one's skills can be improved over time--has been shown to significantly reduce disparities in academic achievement and enhance students' learning outcomes. Although teachers espouse growth mindset principles, most find it difficult to adopt GMSL in their practice due the lack of effective coaching in this area. We explore whether large language models (LLMs) can provide automated, personalized coaching to support teachers' use of GMSL.

A New Era: Intelligent Tutoring Systems Will Transform Online Learning for Millions

Despite artificial intelligence (AI) having transformed major aspects of our society, less than a fraction of its potential has been explored, let alone deployed, for education. AI-powered learning can provide millions of learners with a highly personalized, active and practical learning experience, which is key to successful learning. This is especially relevant in the context of online learning platforms.

A Zero-Shot LLM Framework for Automatic Assignment Grading in Higher Education

Automated grading has become an essential tool in education technology due to its ability to efficiently assess large volumes of student work, provide consistent and unbiased evaluations, and deliver immediate feedback to enhance learning. However, current systems face significant limitations, including the need for large datasets in few-shot learning methods, a lack of personalized and actionable feedback, and an overemphasis on benchmark performance rather than student experience.

Autograding Mathematical Induction Proofs with Natural Language Processing

In mathematical proof education, there remains a need for interventions that help students learn to write mathematical proofs. Research has shown that timely feedback can be very helpful to students learning new skills. While for many years natural language processing models have struggled to perform well on tasks related to mathematical texts, recent developments in natural language processing have created the opportunity to complete the task of giving students instant feedback on their mathematical proofs.

Beyond Answers: Large Language Model-Powered Tutoring System in Physics Education for Deep Learning and Precise Understanding

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has shown significant promise, yet the effective personalization of learning, particularly in physics education, remains a challenge. This paper proposes Physics-STAR, a framework for large language model (LLM)- powered tutoring system designed to address this gap by providing personalized and adaptive learning experiences for high school students. Our study evaluates Physics-STAR against traditional teacher-led lectures and generic LLM tutoring through a controlled experiment with 12 high school sophomores.

Implementing Learning Principles with a Personal AI Tutor: A Case Study

Effective learning strategies based on principles like personalization, retrieval practice, and spaced repetition are often challenging to implement due to practical constraints. Here we explore the integration of AI tutors to complement learning programs in accordance with learning sciences. A semester-long study was conducted at UniDistance Suisse, where an AI tutor app was provided to psychology students taking a neuroscience course (N=51).

Intelligent Tutor: Leveraging ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot Studio to Deliver a Generative AI Student Support and Feedback System within Teams

This study explores the integration of the ChatGPT API with GPT-4 model and Microsoft Copilot Studio on the Microsoft Teams platform to develop an intelligent tutoring system. Designed to provide instant support to students, the system dynamically adjusts educational content in response to the learners' progress and feedback. Utilizing advancements in natural language processing and machine learning, it interprets student inquiries, offers tailored feedback, and facilitates the educational journey.
