The New Visions for New Schools LDC project seeked to build and evaluate the efficacy of the templates and tools provided by the Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) that are designed to support building students' Common Core-aligned reading and writing skills across the disciplines. This project partnered SCALE and David Pearson of UC Berkeley in support of the work of New Visions for New Schools, a New York City school network that provided leadership for both public and charter schools within the district. Funding for the project was provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
As part of this project, SCALE provided technical assistance to New Visions in its implementation and use of LDC templates and scoring tools. SCALE led targeted professional development opportunities for teacher leaders focused on revising LDC tasks and modules, as well as training and calibrating teachers to score LDC tasks. Additionally, David Pearson of UC Berkeley and colleague Jaci Urbani held responsibility for conducting a case study on how an LDC module is implemented, as well as developing a comprehensive and searchable library of "mini-tasks" - formative tasks that built students' ability to complete the final writing task.
- Enhanced teacher capacity to revise LDC tasks and modules
- Revision of LDC rubrics to support New Vision Schools
- New Visions for New Schools teachers now have access to a rich curated library of mini-tasks
- Case study on how an LDC module is implemented
