MOOC – Designing for Deeper Learning: How to Develop Performance Tasks for the Common Core

Designing for Deeper Learning: How to Develop Performance Tasks for the Common Core was an online education course focusing on building educators’ capacity to use, develop, and implement curriculum-embedded performance assessments. The MOOC (massive online open course), funded by the Office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning at Stanford University, was designed for grade 6-12 teachers working in the core disciplines of mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science.

The course supports teachers in understanding, designing, and implementing reliable and valid performance assessments that fit local district and school contexts, and are aligned to Common Core State Standards. Course activities include evaluating sample performance tasks and collaboratively creating and then implementing a performance task that is aligned with a specific curricular unit and performance outcomes.

SCALE conducted research on multiple aspects of the course, including the usability and fit of MOOCs for offering high quality professional development to teachers, and the resources and processes that teachers find most helpful in this assessment work.
